5 daysReimplement weak vectors in Scheme using ephemeronswip-whippetAndy Wingo1-2/+0
* module/ice-9/weak-vector.scm: New implementation, same interface. * doc/ref/api-memory.texi (Weak vectors): Default weak vector value was documented as empty list when it was actually unspecified, but #f is most useful, so we change documentation and code to match. * libguile/Makefile.am (libguile_@GUILE_EFFECTIVE_VERSION@_la_SOURCES): (DOT_X_FILES): (DOT_DOC_FILES): (noinst_HEADERS): (modinclude_HEADERS): * libguile.h: * libguile/deprecated.c: * libguile/deprecated.h: * libguile/init.c: * libguile/weak-vector.c: * libguile/weak-vector.h: Remove C weak vector implementation, replaced with deprecation stubs that call out to Scheme. * libguile/weak-set.c: * libguile/weak-table.c: * libguile/weak-list.h: Remove unused internal header. * libguile/eq.c: * libguile/evalext.c: * libguile/goops.c: * libguile/hash.c: * libguile/scm.h: * module/system/base/types.scm: * module/system/base/types/internal.scm: * module/system/vm/assembler.scm: Remove wvect tc7.

7 daysDon't run finalizers until Guile is initializedAndy Wingo1-2/+1
Prevents a problem where with-exception-handler isn't defined yet by the time the first finalizer gets kicked off (it's a file port, probably one that is closed already...) * libguile/finalizers.h: * libguile/init.c (scm_i_init_guile): * libguile/finalizers.c (queue_finalizer_async): Mark maybe-unused. (scm_init_finalizers): Rework to only enable notification when Guile is finished initializing.

2025-04-22Use Whippet API to boot threadsAndy Wingo1-4/+5
* libguile/scm.h (scm_tc7_thread): Give threads their own tc7. * libguile/threads.h (struct scm_thread): Add a tag, so that struct thread can be a SCM directly. Add a struct gc_mutator* member. (scm_thread_handle): New inline function. (SCM_I_IS_THREAD, SCM_I_THREAD_DATA, SCM_VALIDATE_THREAD): Update to use tc7 instead of SMOB tags. * libguile/continuations.c (scm_i_with_continuation_barrier) * libguile/finalizers.c (queue_finalizer_async) * libguile/jit.c (compile_current_thread) * libguile/threads.c (block_self, guilify_self_2) (lock_mutex, unlock_mutex, timed_wait scm_current_thread) (scm_all_threads) * libguile/vm-engine.c (current-thread): Use scm_thread_handle instead of thread->handle. * libguile/evalext.c (scm_self_evaluating_p): * libguile/goops.c (class_thread, scm_class_of, scm_sys_goops_early_init) * libguile/print.c (iprin1) * module/language/cps/compile-bytecode.scm (compile-function) * module/oop/goops.scm (<thread>) * module/system/base/types.scm (cell->object) * module/system/base/types/internal.scm (heap-tags) * module/system/vm/assembler.scm: (emit-thread?): Adapt to scm_tc7_thread. * libguile/gc-internal.h: Move init functions that take "struct gc_stack_addr" here, so that internal Whippet uses don't cause Whippet to be added to public headers. * libguile/gc.c (scm_storage_prehistory): Take struct gc_stack_addr as arg, and pass to gc_init. Return a mutator pointer. * libguile/init.c (scm_i_init_guile): Pass mutator and stack base to GC and thread init routines. * libguile/threads.c (scm_trace_dynstack, scm_trace_thread) (scm_trace_thread_mutator_roots): New infra for marking threads in terms of Whippet API. * libguile/threads.c (guilify_self_1): Since we don't use a separate GC kind for threads any more, and thread marking is keyed off gc_mutator_set_roots, we can avoid some of the gnarly synchronization. (on_thread_exit): Arrange to gc_finish_for_thread. (scm_i_init_thread_for_guile): Use gc_init_for_thread. (init_main_thread, with_guile, scm_i_with_guile): Use Whippet API. 2023-06-08Rewrite soft ports in SchemeAndy Wingo1-2/+0
This also makes soft ports suspendable. * am/bootstrap.am (SOURCES): Add (ice-9 soft-ports). * libguile/init.c (scm_i_init_guile): No need to init vports. * libguile/vports.c: Call out to (ice-9 soft-ports). * libguile/vports.h: Remove internal scm_init_vports. * module/ice-9/boot-9.scm (the-scm-module): Import (ice-9 soft-ports). Really this enlarges the boot closure a bit, so we should probably refactor. * module/ice-9/soft-ports.scm: New file.
2023-06-08Add "custom ports"Andy Wingo1-1/+3
Custom ports are a kind of port that exposes the C port type interface directly to Scheme. In this way the full capability of C is available to Scheme, and also the read and write functions can be tail-called from Scheme (via port-read / port-write). * libguile/custom-ports.c: * libguile/custom-ports.h: * module/ice-9/custom-ports.scm: New files. * libguile/init.c: * libguile/Makefile.am: * am/bootstrap.am: Add to the build. * doc/ref/api-io.texi: Update the manual.
2021-12-06New function srfi-4-vector-type-size in (srfi srfi-4 gnu)Daniel Llorens1-1/+1
This patch removes the undocumented function make-srfi-4-vector from (guile). That function is still exported from (srfi srfi-4 gnu). * libguile/srfi-4.h (scm_init_srfi_4): Split into scm_bootstrap_srfi_4() and scm_init_srfi_4(), after the pattern of scm_init_bytevectors() and scm_bootstrap_bytevectors(). * libguile/init.c: Replace scm_init_srfi_4() call by scm_bootstrap_srfi_4(). * module/srfi/srfi-4.scm: Load newly defined srfi-4 extension. This provides undocumented make-srfi-4-vector. * module/srfi/srfi-4/gnu.scm: Export srfi-4-vector-type-size. * doc/ref/srfi-modules.texi: Document srfi-4-vector-type-size.
2021-08-03Merge libguile/generalized-arrays.* into libguile/arrays.*Daniel Llorens1-2/+0
* libguile/arrays.h: * libguile/arrays.c: As stated. * libguile/init.c: Remove call to scm_init_generalized_arrays(). Elsewhere fix references to generalized-arrays.*.

2019-05-23Use 'scm_from_utf8_{string,symbol,keyword}' for C string literals.Mark H Weaver1-2/+2
Partial fix for <https://bugs.gnu.org/33044>. Reported by Tom de Vries <tdevries@suse.de>. Fix several instances of the mistake of using 'scm_from_locale_*' for C strings that originally came from a C string literal. Change several uses of 'scm_from_latin1_*' as well, to promote the practice of writing code that works for arbitrary C string literals. Also add missing years to the copyright notices of changed files, based on the git history. * libguile/debug-malloc.c, libguile/deprecation.c, libguile/error.c, libguile/eval.c, libguile/expand.c, libguile/extensions.c, libguile/filesys.c, libguile/init.c, libguile/load.c, libguile/modules.c, libguile/pairs.c, libguile/posix.c, libguile/print.c, libguile/random.c, libguile/read.c, libguile/regex-posix.c, libguile/snarf.h, libguile/srfi-13.c, libguile/stacks.c, libguile/stime.c, libguile/strports.c, libguile/values.c: Use 'scm_from_utf8_*' where appropriate.

2018-08-20Manual JIT interface via %jit-compileAndy Wingo1-0/+2
* libguile/init.c (scm_i_init_guile): Call scm_init_jit (). * libguile/jit.c (enter_mcode, exit_mcode): New static members; code pointers for the JIT trampoline. (emit_exit): New helper. The Lightning tramp/frame mechanism that we use needs to exit via a jmp instead of a return. Adapt callers of jit_ret. (emit_entry_trampoline): Use the "frame" mechanism to enter the JIT. (compile1): Add missing "break" after case statements. Oops! (compile): Add prolog and "tramp" to compiled functions. (initialize_jit): New local routine to init the JIT on demand. (compute_mcode): New helper, to compile a function. (scm_sys_jit_compile): New function, exported to Scheme as %jit-compile. (scm_jit_compute_mcode): Return the existing mcode if the function is at the start. (scm_jit_enter_mcode): Call the enter_mcode trampoline. * libguile/jit.h (struct scm_jit_state): Declare, so we can make pointers to it. * libguile/threads.h (struct scm_thread): Add jit_state member. * libguile/threads.c (on_thread_exit): Free the jit state.
2018-06-20Update license notices in all C filesAndy Wingo1-17/+17
Update to newest recommended license notices from the FSF. Everything stays LGPLv3+ except guile-readline which is GPLv3+.
2018-06-20Remove (C) from copyright statementsAndy Wingo1-1/+1
As the FSF advises, 'There is no legal significance to using the three-character sequence “(C)”, but it does no harm.' It does take up space though! For that reason, we remove it here from our C files.
2018-06-20Make .c copyright headers uniformAndy Wingo1-1/+2
2018-06-20Rationalize include order in C filesAndy Wingo1-31/+26

2018-06-17Refactor handling of auxiliary stacks and setjmp/longjmpAndy Wingo1-6/+0
* libguile/__scm.h (scm_i_jmp_buf): Remove definition, which was a shim for ia64. Instead, always use setjmp/longjmp and jmp_buf. * libguile/_scm.h (SCM_I_SETJMP, SCM_I_LONGJMP): Remove; instead use setjmp and longjmp. * libguile/continuations.c (capture_auxiliary_stack): (restore_auxiliary_stack): New helpers. (scm_i_make_continuation): Use capture_auxiliary_stack. (copy_stack_and_call): Use restore_auxiliary_stack. No need to stash the aux stack on the thread, either. * libguile/continuations.h (scm_t_contregs): Use SCM_HAVE_AUXILIARY_STACK to flag when to have an auxiliary_stack member. * libguile/control.h: * libguile/control.c (reify_partial_continuation, scm_c_abort): (scm_suspendable_continuation_p): Adapt to use setjmp/longjmp directly. * libguile/deprecated.h: Add deprecated scm_i_jmp_buf define. * libguile/dynstack.h: * libguile/dynstack.c (PROMPT_JMPBUF): (scm_dynstack_push_prompt, scm_dynstack_find_prompt): (scm_dynstack_wind_prompt): Adapt to jmp_buf type. * libguile/eval.c (eval): Use jmp_buf and setjmp directly. * libguile/gc-malloc.c: No need for ia64-specific things. * libguile/gc.c: No need for ia64-specific things. * libguile/gc.h: No need to declare scm_ia64_ar_bsp. * libguile/init.c: Remove typedef of setjmp_type for Cray, unused. * libguile/threads.c (guilify_self_1): No more pending_rbs_continuation in scm_i_thread, and register_backing_store_base is handled by libgc. (scm_ia64_ar_bsp): Remove definitions; inlined into continuations.c's capture_auxiliary_stack. * libguile/threads.h (scm_i_thread): jmpbuf member is plain jmp_buf. * libguile/throw.c (catch): Just use jmp_buf and setjmp. * libguile/vm-engine.c (VM_NAME): Adapt prototype to take jmp_buf pointer. * libguile/vm.c (vm_abort): Adapt jmp_buf types. (scm_call_n): Use setjmp.
2018-06-14Fix libguile subcomponent headers not to include <libguile.h>Andy Wingo1-0/+5
* libguile/bytevectors.h: Include uniform.h, for use in the macros. * libguile/extensions.h: Include libpath.h, for the SCM_EFFECTIVE_VERSION, which is almost always used with these routines. * libguile/frames.h: * libguile/instructions.h: * libguile/intrinsics.h: * libguile/loader.h: * libguile/programs.h: * libguile/vm.h: Include <libguile/__scm.h> instead of <libguile.h>. Cuts a circular include, but also precipitates a lot of maintenance in the .c files. * libguile/*.c: Update C files to add needed all needed includes that before were getting automatically pulled in by the indirect inclusion of libguile.h.
2018-03-30Add instrinsics to runtimeAndy Wingo1-1/+3

(intern-constant, link-data): Arrange to be able to write syntax objects into images. * module/language/cps/types.scm (&syntax): New type. Remove &hash-table; it was never detected, an internal binding, and we need the bit to avoid going into bignum territory.
2017-02-28Fix segfault introduced with R6RS port commitAndy Wingo1-1/+1
* libguile/init.c (scm_i_init_guile): Move scm_register_r6rs_ports later, so that defining port types hsa the SCM trampoline subrs defined. * libguile/bytevectors.c (scm_bootstrap_bytevectors): Cosmetic changes.
2016-11-21Deprecate dynamic rootsAndy Wingo1-1/+0
* libguile/root.h: * libguile/root.c: Remove these files. * libguile/deprecated.h: * libguile/deprecated.c (scm_internal_cwdr, scm_call_with_dynamic_root) (scm_dynamic_root, scm_apply_with_dynamic_root): Deprecate. (SCM_ASYNC_TICK, SCM_ASYNC_TICK_WITH_CODE) (SCM_ASYNC_TICK_WITH_GUARD_CODE): Remove internal definitions. We inline into vm-engine.c, the only place where it matters. * libguile/async.h: * libguile/async.c (scm_async_tick, scm_i_setup_sleep): (scm_i_reset_sleep, scm_system_async_mark_for_thread): * libguile/threads.h (struct scm_thread_wake_data): * libguile/threads.h (scm_i_thread): * libguile/threads.c (block_self, guilify_self_1, scm_std_select): Rewrite to use sequentially-consistent atomic references. * libguile/atomics-internal.h (scm_atomic_set_pointer): (scm_atomic_ref_pointer): New definitions. * libguile/finalizers.c (queue_finalizer_async): We can allocate, so just use scm_system_async_mark_for_thread instead of the set-cdr! shenanigans. * libguile/scmsigs.c (take_signal): * libguile/gc.c (queue_after_gc_hook): Adapt to new asyncs mechanism. Can't allocate but we're just manipulating the current thread when no other threads are running so we should be good. * libguile/vm-engine.c (VM_HANDLE_INTERRUPTS): Inline the async_tick business.
2016-10-23Move thread bindings to (ice-9 threads)Andy Wingo1-1/+0
* libguile/init.c (scm_i_init_guile): Don't call scm_init_thread_procs. * libguile/threads.c (scm_init_ice_9_threads): Rename from scm_init_thread_procs, make static. (scm_init_threads): Register scm_init_thread_procs extension. * libguile/threads.h (scm_init_thread_procs): Remove decl. * module/ice-9/boot-9.scm: Load (ice-9 threads), so that related side effects occur early. * module/ice-9/deprecated.scm (define-deprecated): Fix to allow deprecated bindings to appear in operator position. Export deprecated bindings. (define-deprecated/threads, define-deprecated/threads*): Trampoline thread bindings to (ice-9 threads). * module/ice-9/futures.scm: Use ice-9 threads. * module/ice-9/threads.scm: Load scm_init_ice_9_threads extension.
